Welcome

My eyes have led me down a path I never thought I would take. Although holding on to memories has always been important to me, I haven’t dreamed of being a photographer my whole life. I have, however, dreamed of keeping my kids small and my vacations alive. I have wished to stop time, to hold on to the moment, to bottle up my kids cute faces or the silly things they wear. To some extent, photography allows me to do just that. It has opened my eyes to a previously undiscovered world. It has allowed me to see the world around me with a deeper appreciation. I am constantly aware of the extraordinary among the ordinary and the beauty in the mundane. I don't see pictures. I see stories ... with both my eyes and my heart. I am a wordless storyteller. Thanks for joining me here.

Daily Dose of Perspective

Today is one of my favorite days during the academic school year. At our school, it is called Community Impact Day and the kids are divided up, in every grade level, to go out and serve in the community. Normally, I love being involved in this. To me, this is more exciting than anything academically they can learn and I love that they are unified in purpose and in serving together.

This year, I have ramped up working and am trying to learn balance...figuring out how to work from home, parent, being a wife, take care of household chores, etc. I am horrible at saying no and am in desperate need of setting up proper boundaries....whatever that may look like. I clearly haven't figure it all out yet. Today I decided I wouldn't sign up formally to volunteer, but I would take a little time to go and take pictures for the school at each location my children were at. I would be able to work a little, help out a little, and be involved with each of the kids a little.

I left my house around 11 and went to the first location. I planned to meet my mom's group of middle schoolers at a nursing home, This nursing home was near and dear to me as my grandmother lived there for a few years and our kids have spent time there on many occasion. I had all of my camera equipment in hand and couldn't find the students on any of the floors. They finished earlier than expected and I had missed them by less than 5 minutes the employees said.

Bummer.

On to my middle (neglected the most) child. She would be working at a camp - cleaning up the grounds and facilities mostly and I am not sure what else. I drove to the location and then around and around and couldn't find anyone for quite some time. Eventually I found a man raking - who just happened to be a high school teacher with a group of high schoolers around the corner working. No one knew where the fifth graders were. I finally found a worker and explained to him the situation. I told him that my daughter and her class were volunteering here at Camp Lazarus.....AHHH! I realized as it came out of my mouth that I had not come to Camp Lazarus, but I had come to Camp Mary Orton!

Strike two. Camp Lazarus was much to far to be able to travel to now.

So I headed over to where my oldest daughter would be serving. I followed my GPS which took me to the very wrong location. Don't you love it when the blue dot is in the middle of nowhere and says you have "found your location on the left"??? Fortunately she was only 10 minutes or so away so I took time to run over and see if I could get some pictures.

Her group was serving at a food pantry. I had assumed they would be stocking shelves. I was doubtful they would even be there anymore with my current streak of luck. What a wonderful surprise for me to see a room full of people waiting to shop for their food. The kids were taking turns babysitting the kids of patrons shopping or waiting to shop; stocking and organizing items; and escorting shoppers through the pantry which is where my daughter was! THIS was such an amazing and unexpected blessing for me! Kids often complain (and so do we as adults) about not having enough. We always want more and and we want better and we are so often dissatisfied. But my daughter was able to see first-hand how little others have. I was so thankful for this experience for her. A kids world so often revolves around himself or herself and oh how I want my children to learn empathy!

After that, I still had enough time to run over to my son's first grade class and get a few pictures of them writing letters and packing lunches for a local homeless organization.

Early on in my drive, I was so frustrated to be driving around wasting my "precious" and limited time - and here my kids were - getting to do things for others that really matter. I am so thankful to have seen just a glimpse of it - I missed a lot of it - but thankful for the little part I did get to see.

Oftentimes we look at a situation and all we see is the ugliness, the inconvenience, the frustrating aspects, the lack of something, and the opposite of what we really want. We need to look harder. we need to look differently.

Here is a picture of a spot in my backyard that isn't the prettiest.

I have a few spots like this - but here is one. When I look at this, I see a mess. For the sake of today, I was determined to look harder and find beauty in this ugly mess. It took me 45 minutes with my macro lens, but I was able to find some things that I wouldn't have been able to spot at a glance or even with my eyes alone...the beauty of budding flowers and new life!

This little flower is dead - but I love how it looks like it is dancing in the breeze.
This was a combination of a few pictures put together.
Sometimes we might not find a lot to be thankful for or a lot of beauty in the mess. I had to look really hard just for a few shots - and it was windy which made capturing them near impossible with a macro - but there was something!! Find the hope! Find the joy! Don't settle for just the mess.

In what unlikely spot in your life today can you find something beautiful or something to be thankful for?

A Day to Rest [personal]

I know this is theoretically my photography blog - but I cannot take the "me" out of my photography. So at least during this month, some of what I write will be about me likely with photography threads intentionally sewn throughout. Sundays I would like to step back if possible from the business side of AMWeakley Creative and focus a little bit more on pieces of me. I used to have a blog called "Pieces of Me" actually. Today I have some unorganized thoughts. What I share will not be complete on any one topic, and on many I could write pages and pages. But for now, I am just speaking from my heart. My goal is not to offend anyone or make anyone feel unwelcome. I give myself permission to not be perfect here. If I seek perfection, #1 - I will never hit the mark. #2, I will never write anything because my time is limited and I would never get it finished.

So what is on my mind right now?....Rest.

Rest, like freedom, means something a little different to all of us. For me, I find I am most able to rest - to just be still, to cease striving, when I am unplugged and somewhat disconnected from the everyday. I probably have ADD. I live many moments feeling like my head is overflowing with complete chaos....and trying to stay one step ahead of my to-do list which I probably cannot even find because of the sheer number of commitments I have willingly entered into. [People-pleasing is another struggle of mine.] Many days I would just love for a feeling of being finished, the house being clean, something/anything being done completely, an escape from the chaos...

...but there are times. Other time. Times when I am alone - when I can escape the disorder and the many expectations...times when I have just a little quiet and a little time for personal reflection. Those are the times I can really, truly rest. For me, rest is not only stillness of body but a peace in my soul apart from what is going on around me. The Bible says that God rested on the seventh day of creation. I know not only is a day of rest important - but moments of rest....moments of slow, methodical, deep breaths are necessary. In my perfect days, I enjoy these quiet times at the start of my day, focusing myself on what lies ahead and spending time with the Lord, entrusting my day and my life to Him...not in a scripted manner but as talking to a friend and then breathing prayers throughout the day. Ole Hallesby said in his book Prayer, "Prayer is the breath of the soul, the organ by which we receive Christ into our parched and withered hearts." It is my life line to the King of the Universe.

I enjoy these times the most when we are away from home. It is easiest to disconnect. I love pretty views. I believe in Psalm 19 that the "heavens declare the glory of God" and I love any chance to fix my eyes on that.

I love wide open spaces and majestic scenes.

I love getting a few minutes to not only personally reflect but to notice things...things that I miss when I am rushing around. To open my eyes and let God speak to me. To listen.

I love sunsets. They make me feel in those few minutes - restful....and in complete awe and remind me of how small I am in this huge world we live in...and to be honest, of how little control I have over anything that happens. This could be frightening, but it makes me thankful that I know who is in control and I trust Him. I know God has a plan and a purpose and while I may not get it or have all of the answers, I trust Him. He has been faithful in the past and will be faithful in the future.

I share this because it is Sunday...for many a day of intentional rest - a day of worship too. I don't want to save my worship just for Sunday - I want to worship with my life, but I hope to take more time to just BE today....to count my blessings, to name them (If you have read any of Ann Voskamp's 1000 Gifts, you will know what I mean by that), spend time with the Lord and my family and to rest. I hope you too can carve away a few moments today - or later in the week to just BE.

Be blessed ~
Anne Marie

How do you rest?

Matthew 11:28-30
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ~ Jesus

What makes you feel free? {personal} + 31 DAYS of BLOGGING!

Many times in the past few months, I have enjoyed the privilege of spending time with families ~
capturing special moments ~ capturing regular moments too....

Here is what my mommy-heart really thinks: I think in the end, the regular moments are the ones we remember as being so special years down the line. If you polled most parents, I think they would agree that kids are more likely to wear popsicle stained lips and grass stained knees rather then fancy dresses and shiny shoes....but there is value in both, for sure.

I digress...

This little girl was fairly hesitant to get involved in our picture taking. This is not uncommon with little kiddos. One of the reasons I enjoy a long session with a family is that we can really spend time playing and getting to know each other and it allows everyone TIME to warm up to each other. Well on this particular day, after a while, after a time of getting to know each other, I looked over and saw her dad tossing her in the air...I love the expression on her face. What do you see in this picture? Do you see fear?

I see FREEDOM. freedom.

It got me to thinking....What makes me feel free? What makes anyone feel free? I looked up the definition of free - and of course there were many. My favorite was this one from Merriam-Webster: "relieved from or lacking something and especially something unpleasant or burdensome." One practical thing that helps me to relax and to be relieved from overbearing burdens is writing. In light of that, my goal this month is to blog every day. I want to do something that sets my soul free. Many other things contribute to that as well - and I will write about that on another day.

For now, here are just a few random photos from the past few months that show some of my #amwfamilies being free!

If you see me wearing my sunglasses tomorrow....[pieces of me]

Tomorrow our youngest child will walk out of our home and into first grade and threaten to break this momma’s heart. [insert sad emoji!]

It is the day I have dreaded for a longgggg time. longggg time.

I kid you not. (My kindergarten mom friends can vouch for this. They surely haven’t forgotten the ridiculous tears at the end of last year in anticipation of THIS COMING DAY! ~ What in the world??? I know I need to get a grip!) Yes – this may sound a bit dramatic, but if you have been there and done that – you are gulping, breathing deeply, and holding your own tears back from falling helplessly down your face as you remember the baby steps of letting go….or on the contrary, you are a momma who was so ready for a break that you think I have lost my mind because you shouted your freedom from the rooftops and enthusiastically did cartwheels on the day your last left for all-day school! (Thankfully I am not the one doing cartwheels because the older I get, the more those cartwheels do not agree with me at all!)

In my heart, I know the reality is that kids grow up. We need to help them be prepared to "leave the nest".... and this week is just one of the many early steps in this crazy parenting staircase of letting go. Have you heard this quote before? (this is from Etsy)

I am not going to lie ~ my gut wants to clip his wings – because I know all to well how fast this stage of life goes. {Our oldest just turned 13!)

I know that it will seem like tomorrow when he steps out of our home to leave for college,

and then another tomorrow when he finds a wife and starts his own family…

(Oh forgive me if I am jumping ahead just slightly! ) but I know God has gifted us with a beautiful boy who exudes joy and gusto! It would be selfish of us to keep him all to ourselves.  At school he will learn to work with others and take turns; he will learn that the world is not all about him. He will learn courage and patience and probably some bad habits too! (This is not a discourse on schooling verses homeschooling – we have done both! And homeschooling was one of the best decisions we have ever made….but that is another story for another time.)

For now, for today, I am thankful for this sweet little boy who will one day be a man. I am thankful for every skinned knee, every bear hug, every dirty finger nail and every new things learned! And while it seems like such a big step – walking away to school all-day - I will remember to whisper thanks and to savor these little boy moments until the next step in letting go reaches our front door.

And...if you see me wearing my sunglasses when it is cloudy and rainy tomorrow, you will know why.

Here is a free printable from www.inkhappi.com if you want to print it out to take a picture of your elementary schooler on their first day!

(Also, as I was thinking of how sad I am to be away from my little guy - and the girls - all day, I was reminded of the many parent-heroes I know who have had to say good-bye to their little ones too soon. Carey, Katie, Lauren, Amy and many others. You are the real heroes - and what a glorious day it will be when you hold your babies in your arms again!)

What in the world have I been up to?

Really....four months since my last post??? Photographers with booming businesses are heavily intertwined with social media. I get it. Blogging, twittering, posting on Facebook - those are all musts!
I am not in that world right now
I love where I am in my business in this stage of life. Sure there are times when I want to dive right in. I see an opportunity and want to put 110% on the line.
But the timing is not right.

And
timing
is
crucial
just
like
in
photography.

There is a time when it is exactly right to close the shutter and capture the perfect shot. Too early or a little too late - still can make a good shot - but not necessarily that perfect shot. A good photographer knows how to anticipate - survey the entire scene, study and understand all of the elements that have to come together compose THE SHOT. Anticipation involves patience, knowledge, a little bit of imagination, plenty of vision - and ultimately ~ it involves action.

For now, my family is my number one priority. That is the biggest job God has entrusted to me - right now. There will come a time - too soon I am sure - when I have less trips to the park, less clothes to wash, less mouths to feed, less books to read aloud, and less homework to help with. Then, I will have more freedom to pursue my own personal interests. Until then, my blog posts are going to be as needed. Maybe a few a week - or maybe a few a quarter. For now, I am okay with that.

If you have hired me to do a shoot for your family, a wedding, or a design project, you can be confident that I will give you my full attention. That is why I am selective and choose to do a limited number of any one of these things each year.

With that said, I haven't posted on my blog in these past few winter months, but I have still been quite busy doing various photography and graphic design projects! Many times, these things aren't what I want to share with the Internet world or would feel completely appropriate. For example, I had the marvelous privilege of taking pictures at a birth towards the end of the year and have wanted to respect the privacy and intimacy of that special family. I am excited to do a short post in the next week or two about that experience and to share some of the beautiful images. I also had the privilege of taking pictures at a beautiful event for a dear family friend who is battling brain cancer in which almost 700 people attended. Again, not images I would share on a blog like this. However also during these last few months, I have LOVED a few down weeks of time with my most important priority - my family and beautiful kiddos! Here are just a few pictures of some of the things I have done photography-wise...

Family Reunions...
Precious Baby JD...

One of two tween birthday parties...
A basketball league...
My three favorite kids in the whole world ;)...

Blessings!
